Against the Wind

Jim Warren Wild Waters

In 1978 I had sent photos of my paintings to Capital Records in Hollywood California in hopes of painting an album cover, one of my early artistic dreams since high school.  I heard nothing back and assumed the photos ended up in that big black hole, the trash can.

One morning in 1980, I had a call from the Art Director of Capitol.  He told me that Bob Seger wanted a painting of horses for the cover of his new album.  I told him that "I Don't do horses"; my specialty was people. Not to be put off however, he said, "You can do it. I know you can." I reluctantly agreed, being a fan of Seger and knowing the exposure this would bring to my art. I completed the painting in two weeks and brought it up to Capital Records.

Over the next year Seger’s album 'Against the Wind' went to number one on the music charts, which of course pleased me. Then at the end of 1981, I was working in my studio when the phone rang. The Art Director for Capitol greeted me excitedly and said, "Congratulations, we won the Grammy for Best Album Cover!"

Needless to say, I now "do horses"
